ABOUT US
The Formative Years
Soil of Baranagore is historically blessed with the footprints of Sri Chaitanya, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanda and other disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. The dilapidated and abandoned garden house where Swami Vivekananda, along with brother disciples, set up Baranagore Math in September 1886, after the Mahasamadhi of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa on 16th August, holds a unique place in the spiritual history of the world as the first Monastery of the Ramakrishna Order. Following this tradition of renunciation and service, a small orphanage, ‘Bramhananda Balakashrama’, was established in 1912 at Panja Bhawan, Alambazar, after transition to Lalkuthi, Alambazar and Baranagore Ramakrishna Anath Ashrama, Kutighat, which blossomed into a full-fledged Ashrama at its present address on GLT Road and got recognition of Belur Math. Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, which started its journey on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya in 1924, really left an indelible mark in the life of hundreds of localites not only by inculcating quality education but also by preaching the spiritual ethos of Lord Sri Ramakrishna, Maa Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. The primary school was affiliated in 1934, and the higher secondary wing was registered by the Government in 1954. In 1961, Lt. Amitabha Bagchi acquired the first position in the state in the Higher Secondary examination (then, an 11-year course), and the name of Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama High School spread in the entire West Bengal as an institution of excellence.
Vision and Mission
Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama High School is an institution that has not only equipped its students with formal education but also instilled among them the traditional moral values and lessons of service to mankind. Not only have the students passing out from this institution illuminated society with their glorious, multidimensional professional careers, but they have also tried to offer a helping hand to the poorest of the poor in society. They owe not only to their teachers but to the society at large. In their humble manner so they have tried to come back again and again with their philanthropic offerings.
From the very outset, pass-outs of this institution have contributed to society in different ways. While some of them choose the monastic life, Swami Medhasanandaji, Swami Bhaskaratmanandaji, Swami Shastrajnanandaji being some of the most precious gifts this institution has produced for Ramakrishna Math and Mission, many other students became engineer, doctor, Civil Servant, sportsperson, actor, advocate, singer, teacher, politician and made successful career in many other professions. Besides professional life, alumni of this institution have always participated in philanthropic activities in multiple ways.
Formation & Journey of BRKM Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad
In 1987, at the time of the platinum jubilee celebration of the institution, Swami Nityarupanandaji, the then Secretary and Swami Girijatmanandaji, the then Headmaster, inspired the alumni to continue their social works in a regular, organised way. Sri Shyamal Bhattacharya, Sri Madhusudan Pal, Sri Ranjit Singha, Sri Uday Shome, Sri Raju
Chakraborty and Sri Debdas Ganguly responded to that clarion call and constituted Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Praktan Chatra Samsad (BRKMAPCS). In the initial years, they performed different social activities, including medical camps, both at ashrama premises and at remote villages, cataract operations, distributed garments to poor persons and organised blood donation camps, Ramakrishna Mela in 2013. With stupendous support, guidance and hand-holding of the Ashrama Secretaries and High School Headmasters of Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission, the alumni association continued their philanthropic activities. Gradually, Swami Gopeshanandaji Maharaj, Swami Viswanathanandaji Maharaj, Swami Jnanalokanandaji Maharaj, Swami Nityasatyanandaji Maharaj, Swami Ritanandaji Maharaj, Swami Shivapradanandaji

Release of Commemorative India Post Stamp on the occasion of 35 years completion of Praktan Chhatra Samsad
Maharaj and Swami Purnajnananandaji Maharaj guided the Samsad in taking up more noble initiatives for ‘Bahujana Hitay Bahujana Sukhay’. In 2023, after the completion of the 35-year journey of Samsad, a commemorative India Post Stamp was released in the presence of former secretaries of our Ashrama.
Formation & Journey of BRKM Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad Charitable Trust
On 12th January, 1995, Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad (BRKMAPCS) opened a new wing, namely, Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad Charitable Trust (BRKMAPCSCT), where donations would be exempted under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
From the very beginning, these two wings have worked hand in hand, keeping in mind Swamiji's great ideology of ‘Shivagyane Jivaseva’, i.e. "Service to Mankind is service to God", and rendered services towards the poorest of the poor.
Their multifarious initiatives were blessed by Most Revered Srimat Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, 13th President, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Belur Math, when he encouraged the family members of his disciple, Lt. Paresh Chandra Bhawal, to donate their residential house at Centre Sinthee Road to Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad Charitable Trust. The Trust started a computer training centre for the youths at that house in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Department of the Government of West Bengal.
The Trust ran several other activities like Yoga Training, Ved-Sanskrit learning, and Spoken English training for the students. After the renovation of that Trust House in 2024, an Upasana Hall was set up, and the statue of the Holy Trio was unveiled on the holy tithi of Rathayatra. Sri Ramakrishna Prasanga, a regular series of spiritual discourse by senior monastic members of Ramakrishna Math & Mission, has been initiated here on and from 1st May, 2025.
Moreover, in 1999-2000, under the guidance of Swami Sanatananandaji Maharaj, the then secretary of our Ashrama, Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Praktan Chhatra Samsad Charitable Trust was registered as a member of Kolkata Vivekananda Bhab Prachar Parishad.
